Critical Speed Using XLRotor Software
Critical Speed Using XLRotor Software
(OP)
Has anyone used the XLRotor software to design a drive system for a large industrial belt driven fan? I saw the recommendation for the software from the post below:
thread384-103687: Shaft Critical Speed
In evaluating the software it appears to be very useful, however I haven't seen anywhere in the tutorials or help files where a sheave and belts can be applied. I am just looking for some input from others who have used/evaluated this software for similar applications. I am working with a 3'L shaft with an overhung fan on one end, a belt driven sheave on the other and two pillow block bearings in between.
Thank you!

RE: Critical Speed Using XLRotor Software
My thoughts - most sofware will not have a specific model for that.
You are modeling the fan only (not the motor) I assume.
I'd think about putting in spring between center of sheave and ground (use a bearing element for that purpose) and varying the stiffness K0 over a range of very low stiffnesses to see if it has significant impact. K0 to be split among Kx = K0*cos(theta) and Ky = K0*sin(theta) where theta is the angle of the belt with respect to horizontal axis.
There are standard test where you tension a belt in static condition by measuring force/deflection of belt pulled perpendicularly at the center of the belt span. With some drawn out calculations involving belt lengths, geometry, and belt factor, I'm almost positive that there is a (non-straightforward) means to convert that into tension of an equivalent spring while running K0. I'd just try with a range of low stiffnesses first and see if it makes any difference.
My two cents, worth what you paid for it…
