change in thickness of pipe during thermal expansion

change in thickness of pipe during thermal expansion

(OP)
Dear All,

during the thermal expansion of a pipe/shell, IS its thickness will change due to its change in length?
if yes then how this change in thickness is accounted in the tube thickness calc as per asme ug-27.

RE: change in thickness of pipe during thermal expansion

No.

1. I am going to tell YOU to run the numbers for a 3 inch dia, 200 foot long thick-walled pipe going from 50 deg up to 1250 degrees.

(If you like metric, pick an equivalent.)

No, YOU tell me what the difference in thickness is, and what the difference in length is, and which change makes a difference

RE: change in thickness of pipe during thermal expansion

The pipe will expand in all directions, not just length.

The change in thickness of the pipe doesn't need to be accounted for in SVIII D1 as the code uses maximum principle stress theory and bi axial stress, I would assume that these small changes in geometry are accounted for in equation development and testing. Local discontinuities, if analysis is required, should be by other methods not outlined in ASME D1 such as FEA.
