Shear Capacity of Concrete tension Pile

Shear Capacity of Concrete tension Pile

Hi Good People

When calculating shear capacity of concrete pile with dominant direct tension can one consider shear contribution from the concrete? if possible how much?

RE: Shear Capacity of Concrete tension Pile

Not much, so I would neglect it.

RE: Shear Capacity of Concrete tension Pile

On a recent project our geotechnical consultant advised that any driven piles in tension cannot be used to resist shear. Could be project specific but I wouldn't rely on it either as mentioned above.

RE: Shear Capacity of Concrete tension Pile

I ignore the contribution of the concrete in shear when a caisson is in tension. The ties can appear as overkill for such a large diameter member, but I think it's the correct approach.

Thanks for your comment guys.

It just seems conservative to assume no contribution from aggregate interlock or even dowel action.

ACI 318-05 11.3.2.3 actually give formulation for shear capacity of member in tension, but for the tensile stress that I'm dealing with your comment to neglect the concrete still stands.

Thank you again.
