Stepped / Segmented Section view in 3D

Stepped / Segmented Section view in 3D

Stepped / Segmented Section view in 3D

(OP)
NX 8.5

I would like to create a stepped / segemented section view within the 3D model.

I know this is possible in 2D by adding segments to a standard section.

I have managed to get round this by creating a cutter and either doing a cut or assy cut, but wonder if there is an easier way using the view section tool. I have been playing around with the Box Type, but its not really what i am after?

Im sure i managed to do it relativly easy in older versions of NX, and i know its an option that available in Creo.

Thanks in Advance

Adam

No, the "view section tool" works at the graphics card level and only supports planar cuts (no steps, no curved sections, etc).

I assume that you're using the PMI -> Section function, correct? If so, you can't use the 'Lightweight Section View' option only the normal 'Section View', which will allow you to create a sketch in whatever shape that you wish the section cut to be, similar to what you could do using 'Assembly Cut' after sketching and extruding a 'cutting' solid.

we dont have PMI licesnes which would now explain why it doesnt work in the lightweight section.

Has this always been the case?, im sure that I could do it in older versions?

The way we have got around it before to to use to sketch our section and cut (or assembly cut) the section out.

Thanks

RE: Stepped / Segmented Section view in 3D

Now are we talking about creating an isometric/trimetric stepped section view on a Drawing or creating a stepped section in the model file itself? If you're talking about in the model itself and if you've never had a PMI license, then the ONLY option that you would have had would have been the Assembly Cut function. The lightweight sections have ALWASY been just a simple planar cut, or at best, a volume bounded by a box or a pair of parallel plane.

A workaround can be to use assembly cut. Create a subract solid in assembly and remove the solid protion from the entire asm.

RE: Stepped / Segmented Section view in 3D

An 'Assembly Cut' is NOT actually a workaround as it permanently modifies the Assembly model.

What I suspect that Adam is really looking for is exactly what PMI would provide him, the ability to create a model-based Section (stepped or otherwise) which was view-dependent, meaning that the Assembly model would remain unchanged, yet when the PMI view was displayed he would see the sectioned Assembly model, such as seen below in this four-view layout showing an Assembly with one of the views being a PMI Sectioned view:

Hi, yes this is on the 3D rather than 2D.
As noted in the original post we have used a cut (when sectioning a part) or assembly cut (when sectioning an assy) but as John metntioned, although it gives the desired effect, its kind of a "bodge".
However, if the PMI license is required, it may be our only cost effective option.

We have used the "box" feature of the standrd section tool to create some views, but its very limited.

Thanks for your replys
