Modified Type VI Girder

Modified Type VI Girder

Modified Type VI Girder

(OP)
I have to design a single span 47 meters bridge.
I've learned that we can modify the section of standard AASHTO girders, particularly the Type VI since the maximum span for this is about 43 meters.
Do you have any pointers in the design? Any additional checking for the design, aside from the usual girder design?
Based on your experience, what will be the new section of the girder? height? Thanks!

RE: Modified Type VI Girder

I hesitate to answer this, as bridges are not my area, but if you have a girder and are increasing the span, you're going to have to make it deeper. So if you're increasing the span 10%, you'll want to start by increasing the girder depth by 10%.
Aside from that, if I was redesigning an AASHTO standard girder, I would start by either recreating or finding the calculations for that design and making sure I met the minimum requirements it had. If it deflected L/1000, I would make sure I matched that. If it had a FS of 4, so would I.
And as a side note, once you change their design, you own it.

RE: Modified Type VI Girder

That's one heck of a span. Unless you're an experienced bridge engineer I'd recommend that you think twice about taking on that project.

RE: Modified Type VI Girder

When you say modify the section, do you mean change the concrete dimensions? If so, check with a precastor to make sure it cane be manufactured. Typically, the dimensions don't change; just the strand arrangement. Also, look at bulb tees. They're not much different from AASHTO beams but they generally are more efficient. You can look at different DoT standards.

@bridgebuster

Yes sir, It means to changes dimensions (mainly the height) to modify it, aside from increasing the number of strands
