Diffrence between Nylon 6 and nylon 66?? Which one abosorbs moisture more?

Diffrence between Nylon 6 and nylon 66?? Which one abosorbs moisture more?

Hi everyone.

I am totally new to plastic engineering. But I am finding it really interesting.
I know that nylon 6 and nylon 66 both absorb moisture.
I am using these as barriers in my products. But these are abosorbing moisture really fast. And humidity is not good for my products.

Is there any way to avoid passing the moisture through it.
Can i do something during moulding stage to decrease the diffusion rate of water?

Please help??

Sorry if you feel my question stupid?
Any answer will be highly appriciated..

RE: Diffrence between Nylon 6 and nylon 66?? Which one abosorbs moisture more?

Nylons are usually used as oxygen barriers. (IIRC).

Usually co-extruded as film with EVOH as a water barrier.

Do you really mean "moulding" as in injection moulding?

Nylon 6 absorbs marginally more water than nylon 6.6.

First of all, thanks PUD for the reply.

Yeah I am talking about injection moulding.

Actually i want to replace nylon 6 by nylon66. Already im using nylon66 in some products but its kinda costly.
And the major problem is that my products( film capacitor) cant stand mositure because of nylon material.
So i was asking that, Can I do someTHing with nylon6 so that it does not soak water anymore???

And One more question- What is the deal with V0 and V2.???

RE: Diffrence between Nylon 6 and nylon 66?? Which one abosorbs moisture more?

It's often not the amount of water adsorbed that matters most but the rate at which water passes through the plastic. This is called permeability. Which matters most in your case? If the nylon is there as a barrier then it's the latter. One way to slow that down significantly is by adding a platy filler. High aspect ratio mica is probably the best choice.

V0 and V2 are fire retardancy ratings. V0 is the best.

It won't lower cost but Nylon 612 will absorb much less water than 6 or 66. But if you are serious about keeping water out you should get away from nylons all together. The are plenty of plastics out there that do not absorb water.
