I know a general rule is that a laterally restraining member must be able to carry 2% of the axial load in the column, but in British Standards this is only mentioned in the steel code. It seems to also be the case in American Standards. What if you want to restrain a concrete column with a steel member. Is there any code that gives minimum force that a member bracing a concrete column must be able to carry and do the stiffness requirements applying to steel also apply to concrete?

The stiffness and strength criteria for steel are derived from theory, and also assuming a certain initial out of plumbness. The values should still be applicable assuming the initial out of plumbness is appropriate. If you have a fixed connection instead of the assumed lateral only restraint, the requirements could be very different. There may be some papers on the subject if you try searching google.

The connection would not be fixed, it would be an I beam bikted with simple connection to the concrete column face. The reason I am looking at this option is that it would be much easier to install a steel section than to build in a concrete beam. Has anyone used a steel section to provide lateral restraint to a concrete column?

Is it SebM or sybie99? Whoever, the 2% is largely empirical, structural engineering judgement somewhat based on theory, and there is no reason for it to be material based.

So restraining a concrete member with a steel section is on order? In eurocode there are no stiffness requirements though surely this must be important. I believe there is a clause in the American codes that gives a limit to the allowable defection at the restraint point. Could anyone tell me what this is?
