Acceptance Criteria for Acoustic Examination Test

Acceptance Criteria for Acoustic Examination Test

Acceptance Criteria for Acoustic Examination Test

(OP)
smileHi,

I am working on set of Division 2 vessels thickness (50-65mm, SA 516 Gr 65 +Alloy 825 clad). There is NDT requirement for Acoustic Emission Examination based on Article 12 of ASME Sec V.

Please provide acceptance criteria for Acoustic Examination test for heavy wall pressure vessels?
ASME Sec VIII Div. 2 and ASME Sec V do not specify the acceptance criteria.

Please advise.

Thank you for your time.

Regards,

cheers

RE: Acceptance Criteria for Acoustic Examination Test

Acoustic Emission examination has been specified to provide information to the Owner/User relative to "hearing" crack intiation and growth. It is informational. If a potential crack site is identified, volumetric examination using UT (preferabley phased array and TOFD)is normally conducted for verification.

RE: Acceptance Criteria for Acoustic Examination Test

7.8 is clear, "The acceptance criteria shall be stated in the User's Design Specification." If the User has not specified the acceptance criteria, it is truly an informational test. Generally speaking one is looking for noise of specific frequencies eminating from specific locations and increases in the amount of noise from those specific locations during the hydrostaic test depicted in FIG T-1244.3.2 in Article 12. Such noise indications may be an indication of crack growth. Locating the specific locations is quite redily done and further examinations of those locations may then be performed.

RE: Acceptance Criteria for Acoustic Examination Test

Clarification: 7.8 of ASME VIII, Div.2.
