spring steel

spring steel

spring steel

(OP)
Hi,

I am facing problem with the replacement of spring steel material. The design has been done based on AISI 9260 material but there is an availability issue, unable to find the manufacturers.Hence there is a request to change the material to AISI 5160.

AISI 9260 flat bars used together as a spring where both the ends are closed with bushes and this material has good elastic properties. I doubt on the AISI 5160 since there is a huge variation in yeild strength.

Honestly i need the help to decide to change the material from AISI 9260 to AISI 5160.

Thanks
Dannie

RE: spring steel

Hi

Well you have told us nothing about the springs, loads, spring size etc without any information other than your doubt about the spring material how can we help you?

RE: spring steel

If 9260 steel is not available, you still have multiple options. 5160 steel can be used to make excellent springs, as can 9254, or 1075 or several proprietary grades from steel mills. As stated by desertfox, you will need to provide more information to get any meaningful help.

RE: spring steel

As long as you match the yield strength and UTS you can use any steel.
Realistically anything with 50-70 points C should do the job.
You need to dictate the heat treatment to get the desired properties.
