I want to qualify a buttering procedure accd. to AWS D1.1, what will be the groove preparation, range qualified for this procedure and also the test required when qualifying a buttering procedure.

RE: Buttering According to AWS D1.1

Is this a repair procedure or a just an overlay with repeated stringer passes? Most cases I have seen buttering is just part of another pre-qualified welding procedure.

Providing fabrication and erection efficient structural design of connections. Consulting services for structural welding and bolting.

RE: Buttering According to AWS D1.1

Buttering is generally used for corrections of weld gaps. This would be done to the qualified procedure for that joint.

If you have been asked to qualify a buttering procedure by your client, just qualify as per the joint that will be welded and just add additional hardness across the buttering into the HAZ and the parent.
