Minimum Size of Fillet Weld For a T-Joint

Minimum Size of Fillet Weld For a T-Joint

Minimum Size of Fillet Weld For a T-Joint

(OP)
Table J2.4 of AISC ASD9th Edition provides minimum size of fillet welds. However they do not distinguish between lap joint or a t-joint. I would assume that Table is valid for only lapp joint fillet welds.

Is there any such minimum weld size table for T-joint fillet welds. I will be welding a 1/4" plate to 2" plate T-joint. Is there any minimum weld size that must be met to obtain a sound weld ?

Thanks

RE: Minimum Size of Fillet Weld For a T-Joint

Strainstress:
Table J2.4 does not say it is limited to lap joints, it applies to any joint, as a function of the thicker material being welded. Read and think about the 1st para. under ‘b. Limitations’, just above the table. The thicker pl. acts as a heat sink, and they want you to use a large enough weld (input enough heat in the welding process) so the cool thicker pl. does not quench the weld as it cools. This quenching (quick cooling) leads to weaker, crack susceptible welds. However, this quenching problem can be overcome by preheating the thicker plate a bit before welding. Then the thicker pl. does not draw the heat away from the weld so quickly.

Thanks dhengr,

Weld expert at my company gave the exact same response. Thanks for validating his response.

Oh and btw dhengr, do you know if this is only applicable to carbon steel. Or is the min. weld size and preheating applicable to stainless steel joints too ?

RE: Minimum Size of Fillet Weld For a T-Joint

On the other hand, any weld thicker than the smaller of the two plates (pipe walls or whatever) being joined is useless.

How do you figure that, racookpe? Remember, the OP is asking about fillet welding.
