Carbon Steel Pipe

Carbon Steel Pipe

Carbon Steel Pipe

(OP)
Hello,

I am just trying to test a railing by the OSHA specifications. The railing is ASTM A53 grade A Sched 40 Carbon Steel. The railing is 6 feet long between posts and 42 inches high. The nominal weight is 2.72 lb/ft, yeild strength 30 ksi, tensile strength 48 ksi, and allowabale stress 22 ksi. The railing is supposed to be able to withold a 200 lb force in any direct except for up. Can someone help me figure out how to prove the the railing meets the specifications

RE: Carbon Steel Pipe

Well, you didn't give the member size (just weight) so it's pretty hard. But if you put a 200 lb. lateral load on your top rail in the center of a 6'-0" span you can check that member in bending. And if you put that load at the top of one of your posts, you can check that as a cantilever beam. Then check your anchorage and you're done.
Are you really a structural engineer?
