Slotted Holes & Eccentrically Loaded Bolt Group

Slotted Holes & Eccentrically Loaded Bolt Group

Slotted Holes & Eccentrically Loaded Bolt Group

(OP)
I have an office debate I would love to hear opinions on:

Slotted holes may be used without being slip-critical if the load direction is perpendicular to the slot. Does that imply that the eccentrically loaded bolt group table 7-7 for 0 degrees is valid with slotted holes? (load is applied perp to the slots)

RE: Slotted Holes & Eccentrically Loaded Bolt Group

If the slots can only take load in the perpendicular direction, then I would say no, you can't use the eccentric load group table. The twisting action is taken out by the couple created from the 2 end bolts with loads parallel to the slot. I believe the values in table 7-7 consider the bolts restrained in both directions. And as you have stated, per J.3.2 if the connection is a bearing type then loads perpendicular to the slot only may be applied.
