When you have a kicker brace attaching from an open web steel joist to its supporting structure (e.g. to brace the bottom flange on a beam), do you require that all roof dead load be placed prior to the braces being installed?

Yes, we put a note on the section to that effect.

Do you typically get much resistance from the contractor on this requirement?

I believe the usual practice is to provide a slotted hole in the connection, then tighten the bolt after placing dead load.
