fillet ellipse intersection

fillet ellipse intersection

(OP)
I'm trying to use DraftSight to draw an art nouveau style window. To do so, I need to use the "fillet" command at the intersection of straight lines, arcs, and ellipses. The arcs and lines are no problem, but I am unable to make it work with ellipses. When asked to specify the intersecting lines after the fillet command, the program will not accept the ellipse. Am I missing something, or is this just not possible with DraftSight? Thanks.....

Tom

RE: fillet ellipse intersection

I don't believe it can fillet ellipses because they don't have a constant radius. If you can do the geometric construction, you can draw the line from the ellipse center to the point of tangency, then create the fillet arc perpendicular to that line.

Well, I was afraid of that.... but it seems that the program should be able to determine tangents at any point of an elliptical curve easier than a mere human like me though, don't you think?

Just to say -- I found a work-around. Just offset to the inside of both curves, then use the intersection as the center of a circle with a dia of 2x offset, then trim.
