Dear All,

Could u pl. suggest the AWS Class of the welding electrodes for SMAW process for the welding of dissimilar materials, Carbon steel (P-1) to Corten steel (P-3, SA 588 Gr-B) Materials . Also pl. suggest me the AWS class for swaw welding electrode for Corten steel welding.

Thanks in advance

RE: AWS CLASS

Hi Tekari123,

The correct specification is ASTM A 588, not ASME( SA 588 as stated above).

AWS SFA5.5 E-7018W1 or 8018W2 would be the choice of SMAW electrode based on the nominal UTS of the corten steel grade being used.

Thanks

Dear Sir,
Thanks for your kind reply. But I don't find any E-7018W1 listing in in SFA5.5 ( ASME SECTION II Part C). Only 7018-A1, 7018-B1 & 7018 B-3 is there. where can I find this??

Regards,

Alok

RE: AWS CLASS

E7018-W1 is included in Table-2 of SFA-5.5 under "weathering steel electrodes". W indicates weathering in Classification description.

RE: AWS CLASS

You can use any E7018 SMAW electrode or any E70S-X or E70T-X electrode to join ASTM A588 to any P1 carbon steel.

You do not need to match the weathering characteristics of the A588 since it is welded to plain carbon steel. Essentially, the weld's corrosion resistance will be similar to that of the plain carbon steel if the joint consists of a multipass weld joint. The dilution with the A588 when using multipass welds is very low, so there is little alloying of the completed weld. If the joint is a single pass weld, there will be some dilution with the A588, but still, it will be minimal.

Best regards - Al

RE: AWS CLASS

Is A588 because corten steel is not allowed in ASME Code construction? Poster should seems to be using it in Code fab...
