Fan for biogas flare - is there an allowable leakage?

Fan for biogas flare - is there an allowable leakage?

(OP)
In a biogas flare system - the booster fan leaks biogas around the shaft seal of the motor. It is a small leak but the smell is evident which I am worried may concern insurance companies or inspectors. The fan and all surrounding equipment is designed for a class 1 div 1 environment. I am wondering if anyone knows of any regulation stating what is acceptable for leakage in this type of setup?

RE: Fan for biogas flare - is there an allowable leakage?

You shouldn't leak more gas than can create a harardous atmosphere or be a hazard to health. This will vary widely depending on the composition of the gas and its effect on health. Sounds to me ike you need a better seal or to fix the one you have - grease it / tighten it up / replace it.

My motto: Learn something new every day

Also: There's usually a good reason why everyone does it that way
