Are there any proper techniques or tricks to preventing pipe from bowing on a lateral weld? Connecting 16" pipe to 14" branches steel piping. Any help is appreciated. Thanks Jim.

RE: preventing pipe bow on fishmouth weld

Can you provide a sketch of what you are talking about? To prevent or fix bowing, we always either build negative camber into the jig or use a torch to heat certain areas after welding.

RE: preventing pipe bow on fishmouth weld

Assuming that you may not be able to support the run pipe during welding, weld with the o'let branch in the 3:00 position using small diameter electrodes.

RE: preventing pipe bow on fishmouth weld

Jim...

What are the materials being welded and what is the schedule of the stainless piping ?

If the piping is thinner than 10S schedule, it can be a horror show to weld.

How about a sketch ???

Looks like Jim was here 3 times on Nov 11 and has not been back since.

Not sure if these procedures can be incorporated in your pipe welding WPS or PQR etc.
