What is this piece of railway equipment called (see photo)?

(OP)
Hi all

I am new to the railway industry and during my site surveys I have come across a piece of equipment numerous times. I have attached a link for the photo.

Heard this being called an axle counter or spider plate, but I am not convinced.

Appreciate the help

Thanks

Looks like there is no manual or electric switch needed at the crossing to me with the extra guiderail to the side as constructed. However, I have no idea what the equipment is called. Sorry.

A pallet someone threw on the side of the tracks?

RE: What is this piece of railway equipment called (see photo)?

It's a transmitter as part of the train warning system.

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Train_Protection_&... and go down to 2.2 and you have a picture of the same thing.

My motto: Learn something new every day

Also: There's usually a good reason why everyone does it that way
