steel making process-SA 516
(OP)
Dear experts
We procured a plate material (sa 516) and its test certificate from a reputed german manufacturer. As per 5.1 of sa 20, the steel shall be made in open hearth, basic oxygen or electric arc furnace. But in the tc, they didnt specify exactly the type of furnace. They stated only killed steel and vaccum degassed in melting process section.is it acceptable? Plz advise

My concern is over the type of furnace employed. not about grain practice.

I am not from metallurgical background. It will be more helpful,If you can explain the basis of acceptance. Also from the manufacturer website, I understood that they are using blast furnace for melting which is not falling under any of the furnace specified by ASME.

First, obtain a copy of SA 516 and review it. You do not need a metallurgical background to perform such a review. Second, obtain a copy of SA-20, which is general requirements for steel plates. All of the information is there to review a Material Test Report, and steel making practice. Also, what is tc?
RE: steel making process-SA 516
5.1 The steel shall be made in an open-hearth, basic oxygen,
or electric-arc furnace, possibly followed by
additional refining in a ladle metallurgy furnace (LMF),
or by another method; or secondary melting by vacuum arc
remelting (VAR), electroslag remelting (ESR), or
another method.
A blast furnace produces hot metal, which is refined into steel and would fall under basic oxygen, above. So, again, the material is acceptable.

metengr very interesing points there...would like to ask where one could find SA-20 if possible would you share with us.

Thank you very much for your reply."A blast furnace produces hot metal, which is refined into steel and would fall under basic oxygen"-this is what I am looking for. Further tc stands for test certificate.Guess I confused you bit.

You can find SA-20 in ASME Sec II Part-A
