Ventilation requirements for non-occupant area
Ventilation requirements for non-occupant area
(OP)
Hi Everyone,
I have to condition a space which would be classified as non-occupant area. WSHP will be used for cooling and heating of that area. Do I have to provide an outside air for a space that will not be occupied at all? Equipment in the space requires conditioning of the area. Thank you!

RE: Ventilation requirements for non-occupant area
if that is the case, you need to take care of two aspects:
- does equipment produce any kind of air pollution, like pollutant gases, dust etc.
- how maintenance work will be done, can door to adjacent space which is ventilated or large enough to have some "buffer" of clean air, be open during maintenance work.
RE: Ventilation requirements for non-occupant area
In the equipment room there are two large electric units: pulse generator and AC/DC power supply. The equipment does not produce any air pollution. Equipment maintenance would be performed semiannually. Yes, the door can be open to the adjacent conditioned space.

So if this room is 1,000 ft2, minimum ventilation would be:
(.06 * 1000) + (4 * 5) = 80 cfm.

if legislation does not concern you (at least us legislation), than i would recommend that you take a look at generator manufacturer's documentation.
if none of it is binding you, you could possibly omit ventilation in such a space, as you neither have direct pollution, nor occupancy demands, not you need ventilation for heat rejection.
chas, do you have some one-page table of new ashrae 62.1 demands to link at? i know that 62.1 is much more than simple table, but i would like to compare it with older version of standard that i possess.
