Material selection for hydrotreater/hydrocracker reactors

(OP)
Dear all,

Normally, 1.25 Cr-0.5 Mo or 2.25Cr-1Mo is selected for this service based on Nelson curves for the service.
However, can 300 series SS be used ? If yes, what shall be selected ? 304, 304L, 321, 347 ? what are the problem of using SS ?

RE: Material selection for hydrotreater/hydrocracker reactors

Cost. That's about it.

Stainless can solve one problem, but could open up other degradation modes dependent upon the actual service conditions. Get yourself API RP 571 and search on "hydrotreater; hydroprocessing; cladding" it will point them out to you.

Note that further limits to chemistry are required for the base metals to mitigate temper embrittlement. Additional mechanical testing beyond that of the base metal specifications are required, especially for hydrocracker reactors.
