RE: Y14.3 MULTIVIEW AND SECTIONAL VIEW DRAWINGS
(I had tacked this question onto the end of another thread, but feel it needs better visibility)

Is an orthographic projected view from a section view (full, half or partial) allowed? The standard addresses taking a section from a section, but that's about it. I am struggling to find support in the standard for prohiting such views as this goes against what I was taught, but this practice is very common where I work (the "DRM" already takes exception to the section-from-section rule). I feel I am going to lose this argument without a documented source prohibiting this practice.
TIA!

RE: View Projection Question

Did anybody have a chance to see if latest 2012 version of 14.3 is any better?

RE: View Projection Question

I was not aware that 2012 was available... I got the 2003 version (reaffirmed 2008) from IHS just a couple of months ago.

OK, instead of documentation, what is the consensus regarding projecting views from sections?

For example... a cylindrical part viewed on end, a vertical section, then a full view projection showing the opposite side of the initial view.

RE: View Projection Question

If I understood your description correctly, I would have no problem with the view like this.
Back in my time (I am old) we entertained the idea of the "main view", the one that conveys the most information about the part.
And replacing this view with section to provide even more information was appropriate.

I guess today it's more of a matter of what your CAD software can do and common sense.

Thenks!
My opinion of disallowing them is based on an "extension of principal" where a section from a section is not allowed. Since our DRM does allow this, I must concede that a projection from a section should also be allowed.
