Body designers

(OP)
Hello,
I am a new member and not in the auto industry.  My son is interested in creative body design.  He is looking for an information interview to help decide his direction.  I agreed to help him search for any designers to call here in southern California.  We do not know the best schools, salsries, opportunities, etc.  My search for how to reach designers has been less than successful, so any leads, information, web sites, etc., would be appreciated.  Thank you and happy halloween.
Regards,
Jeff

RE: Body designers

Do you mean designing the sheetmetal, or styling the car?

I suspect you mean the latter are stylists, and have a separate career path from engineers.

Typically they have degrees in industrial design, or automotive styling. In England the obvious place to approach would be RCA in Coventry (sorry, don't know what it stands for). Why not contact the human resources department of any major car firms in your area and ask them?

In Ca you have Nissan, Lincoln, and Mazda at least.

Cheers

Greg Locock

RE: Body designers

There is the school in Pasadea. It is Art Center College of Design. http://www.artcenter.edu/ They are one of the biggest in the field.

RE: Body designers

Industrial drsign is good for your son I think!because your son has a basis of design.

RE: Body designers

I am a mechanical engineer from Iran . I agree with Greg Locock . I think , he should consider his interest .If he is graduated , I think it is better for him to work in his field , as body design is related with many other branches form styling (wich is an art work ,graphics , clay modeling) to body in white design (which has feasibility studies , concept design, detail design) and manufacturing ( concerning defferent manufacturing methods , die design , rapid prototyping , machining ) so as you see body design contains many defferent branches , and first he should know some information about this different courses and then find his interest and continue .

As your son is interested in Creative Auto body design that means he wants to be a Automobile/Transportation Designer.
The first thing is he should have basic drawing/sketching skills and i assume he should be having them.If not he can still join a art school and learn the basics.Art center college of design ,Pasadeana offers eve/night classes for sketching basics.
Also i assume that you are in southern California. Then thats the place where most of the design studios of japanese, german and japanese auto manufactures are situated, including toyota, bmw & mercedes(Around LA & Orange county). Also one of the worlds top design school is located in Pasadena <www.artcenter.edu>;.
Also you can check this website for more information on car design <www.cardesignnews.com>;.
Also you can visit the college(get an appoinment) with your son and talk to any of the Faculity about the  salsries, opportunities, nature of work as most of the faculity in transportation design there works/worked in a major design studio. So if he graduates in transportation design then he may work in a automobile design studio and his nature of job would be anything from concept development, basic design, clay modeling, package layout,..etc where his creative input is needed strongly, whereas an engineer in a body design will be refining or fixing things that are left out by the designer or he would work as a structural engineer which is an intresting feild altogether but he would be working on someone's design(designers).
Also automobile design jobs are very very limited and requires way more hard work and is highly competitive, but the graduation may also make him a good product designer if he concentrates a bit on that side too....think this should help....good luck
