Lateral Torsional Buckle in a Built Up Shape

Lateral Torsional Buckle in a Built Up Shape

For the built up shapes show in table 1-20 (S shapes with cap channels) how is lateral torsional buckling checked? Is it a required check for this shape? I would like to use a S12x31.8 with a C10x15.3 cap channel for a monorail beam.

Thanks

RE: Lateral Torsional Buckle in a Built Up Shape

Torsional-Flexural Buckling for singly symmetric sections with the Y axis taken as the axis of symmetry is covered in the Canadian code. I am not familiar with the AISC code, but I would expect it is covered there also.

I don't know if you have AISC's Steel Design Guide Series......but 'Volume 7, Industrial Buildings: Roofs to Column Anchorage', covers the design for such a situation.

PEFLWI,

You can also refer to following for design:
1. CMAA-74(SPECIFICATION FOR MONORAIL)
2. CISC(Canadian) publication -Guide to the design of Crane and Crane supporting structures.

Thanks all. I think what I need is in section F4 in the 2005 Steel Manual.
