API SPEC 6A

API SPEC 6A

API SPEC 6A

(OP)
Hi all,

please help me about material code or uns number for API spec 6A.
material stated flange #5000 RTJ WN type 6B,API spec 6A material 45K sch 120 R39.
anybody can help me for material code or UNS number ?
i search in internet, commercial code for 45K is A105 carbon steel but i am not sure because this material will connect to wellhead.

thanks
Ciko

RE: API SPEC 6A

typical API materials for 5K service are AISI 4130, or the like. I'm not sure about the 45K classification, but I've been away from 6A for too many changes.

RE: API SPEC 6A

You need to ask a materials engineer which is the right material for your wellhead conditions. High co2 or h2s at different temperatures will need different materials.

A105 is fairly basic carbon steel so you'll need a fairly benign set of well head conditions. Only you know.

My motto: Learn something new every day

Also: There's usually a good reason why everyone does it that way

RE: API SPEC 6A

API 6A does not specify material type only material properties which for your 5000 PSI loose flange is designated 45K and then refer to table 6 which gives minimum tensile, elongation and reduction in area values.

I assume that Carbon Steel is suitable for service but you will find A105 will not meet these requirments and as mentioned AISI 4130 is commonly used. On my present project we are using ASTM A694 and stipulating that it must meet Table 6 properties.

RE: API SPEC 6A

A105N-45k material is commonly used for API-6A (NACE rated) welding neck flanges only when the dimensions meet API-6A guidelines, anything outside of given dimensions, the flange becomes "other end connection". Since your bore size exceeds API max ID (3.47) you will need to do the math and see if 45k material is acceptable. Typical A105 material (5k only) is used for field welding requirements, since it will most likely be welded to A106/ASTM pipe or equal material. See 10.1.2.2. Type 6B flanges API-6A-20th for more information about sizing welding neck flanges. If you can use A105N-45k material, the flange will have a DD/EE-NL rating for H2S service.
