Roadway Stationing

Roadway Stationing

Roadway Stationing

(OP)
I have a proposed 3/4 mile roadway off an existing local roadway that terminates at a new pump station facility. What is the ideal way to station something like this? Since it is going to be constructed starting from the existing roadway I would start station 10+00 at the centerline of the existing roadway. It will cause all profiles to have the north arrow down.

I know I know you station roadways from north to south and west to east. Ideally you want north arrow up or to the left, and you always show profiles on your plan sheet stationed left to right.

Just interested to hear opinions on the best way for this particular situation.

Thanks

RE: Roadway Stationing

Stay with convention....those who construct the roadway will understand your drawings better. There is nothing wrong with ending your stationing on an "odd" number.

Ending with an odd number???? The issue is that they will construct from the existing roadway so I would think it is better to start stationing at the existing roadway centerline. Just as you would do with a gravity utility line and start 0+00 at the discharge end.

RE: Roadway Stationing

I would start station 1+00 (I always start with 1+00 as opposed to 0+00 to avoid a potential negative station if a design changes), at the CL of the existing roadway where you are tying in.

RE: Roadway Stationing

10+00, 20+00 or 50+00 is typical for starting a new roadway station from the exisitng CL; it depends on how much you need to show left of the existing CL. Also, make sure to match the local DOT in regard to station conventions. If the standard stationing puts the north arrow pointing down just follow it and make sure that the you profile left to right with increasing station to right. I seems odd but contractors will get it. Just show your north arrow correctly.

Here we have two agencies that station opposite; Our City DOT is North to South West to East and County DOT is South to North West to East.

RE: Roadway Stationing

makes no difference where you think the contractor will start. in reality, road construction for such a short road may not proceed from one end to the other. likely they will grade the entire thing and then pave the entire thing and you really dont care on which end they start the pavers. I always try to keep north upwards, but only the DOT cares. If this is a private access road, then nobody cares which way you station it.

RE: Roadway Stationing

I was chewed out for something similar, very recently, stationing backwards in front of a small lot for a street. But the plan checker understood why I was doing that, then shook his head and hands, not very happy, and said that's okay. Be ready for some more chewing out, because you obviously don't know what you are doing since you started backwards. Everything we design is built and people are spending their money or living happily ever after. Go figure.

RE: Roadway Stationing

:Looks like we need a poll:

I would keep the north arrow up, station left to right.
It will be less confusing to most industry people looking at the plans.
