ASME I design vs ASME VIII Div.1

ASME I design vs ASME VIII Div.1

ASME I design vs ASME VIII Div.1

(OP)
Hi

I need to calculate the minimum allowable thickness (MAT) of a power boiler and its steam drum.
The original design code was ASME I 1969 (with "S" stamp), meaning the equipment is in full operation now for
more than 40 years.
The MAT calculations will be done for the shells, tubesheets and nozzle necks. There are no original calculations
available for comparison.

My questions are:
1. Is there a difference in formulas and calculations methods between ASME I and ASME VIII Div.I?
2. Can I use software such as Compress or PV Elite for these calculations and select ASME VIII Div.1
as the design code to determine the MAT's?
3. Can I do an FEA to the rules of ASME VIII Div.2 to determine the MAT's?

Thanks in advance.

RE: ASME I design vs ASME VIII Div.1

You are seeking the thickness required for internal pressure?

1) Yes, there is a difference.
2) Yes, and the results would not conform to the requirements of Section I 1969. This is like buying a $100 calculator to solve 1+1=x.
3) Yes, and the results would not conform to the requirements of Section I 1969. This is like buying time on IBM's latest super computer to solve 1+1=x.

Even if the 1969 edition is not available, Section I is still your best bet. You can probably cross reference your earliest available edition of Section I, but you stand less of a chance of going wrong if you use the latest edition of the original code of construction.

For more info, see ASME FFS-1.

RE: ASME I design vs ASME VIII Div.1

If you have a National Board number either stamped on the boiler or labeled on the casing of the boiler, you can order for a nominal fee a copy of the manufacturers data sheet; otherwise you must use the ASME power code I(probably 1969 or earlier) to which this boiler was constructed. This code will have all the equations that you need.
