Can these columns fail?

Can these columns fail?

(OP)
I'm appointed a site Engr on a 4-storey residential building project. There is error in the mix proportion used for some columns of size 225x450mm and each column carries an average ultimate load of 600KN. The mix ratio used is 1:3:3 instead ratio 1:2:4 specified. pls will these columns failed or what shud i do. am comfused pls?

RE: Can these columns fail?

This is a question you should be asking the Engineer who designed the columns, not people on the internet.

RE: Can these columns fail?

CANEIT is right. Your job as site engineer is not to make decisions about the design, but rather to make sure the design is followed. In cases where there are errors, you must refer back to the design engineer.

RE: Can these columns fail?

Your job is to gather data such as the actual mix ratio used, strenght of the concrete test blocks and figure out what the impact is if you wait for the test results, the engineer decides it needs to be replaced, but by then more has been built on top of it.

Safe decision - find out who made the mistake - if it's a supplier then he has a large bill coming - and demolish the columns and start again. Otherwise wait for test results and for someone else to make the call.

My motto: Learn something new every day

Also: There's usually a good reason why everyone does it that way
