Soil Pressure Resisting Moment from Steel Post Embedded in Concrete Pier

Soil Pressure Resisting Moment from Steel Post Embedded in Concrete Pier

I have to design structure for an 8'x4' sign (8' is horizontal dimension) - to be mounted to two steel posts embedded in concrete pier. The steel embedded in concrete design is not a problem. What I need is a procedure to figure out the pressure on the soil from the concrete pier wanting to turn over.

RE: Soil Pressure Resisting Moment from Steel Post Embedded in Concrete Pier

There is a free excel for this by Alex Tomanovich. His excel referenced it to

"Resistance to Overturning of Single, Short Piles" - by Eli Czerniak

There are fairly simple methods in this also, I just made my own Mathcad program to get through the iterations faster:

Standard Specifications for Structural Supports for Highway Signs, Luminaires, and Traffic Signals, 6th Edition

This is just a simple pole footing design. The latest AITC manual has all the necessary info for that, to include the allowable maximum lateral soil pressures to use without a geotech report.

Thank you.

I have an old Navy Manual for designing embedded poles/posts.

The spreadsheet (and common sense) will do.

Does anyone have that paper by Eli? I cannot find on web without giving away email information to scrib. Last time I did that I was getting weird spam. Thx.
