Metal Deck attachment

(OP)
All,

I have seen details where a slab step in steel structures is achieved by welding an angle to the web of a beam and resting the deck on it. How does the deck get attached to the angle in those situations? Are they able to puddle weld these situations?

The reason for my question is that I have a situation where the architect is trying to rest the deck on the bottom flange of a W-shaped beam. In these situations, is it possible to weld the deck to the flange?

RE: Metal Deck attachment

Yes, it is possible. Review AWS D1.1, I believe it provides necessary working clearances, don't have one handy at the moment.

If the ledger is held up higher on the web, I like to use a longer ledger (LLH) so that the deck can be dropped in and clear 1/2 of the beam flange width.

Assuming the other half of the deck rests on the top flange, your compression flange is still braced.
