subtracting components

subtracting components

subtracting components

(OP)
in nx8.0.3.4 & i think 7, i have an issue subtracting component solids from the main assy. first off let me say that changing the "within work part" to "entire assy" on every new target solid takes alot of clicks. i found by useing "replace face" & changeing it to "entire assy" in that command will keep it in the subtract & unite functions. lucky to stumble across that one!!!!

anyhow my problem is i have 600 solids that are component subtractions in the main that i would like subtracted from my target. i have to pick each solid individually instead of windowing around them all. 600 clicks is alot of time!!! is there something i could be doing different?

RE: subtracting components

???
This workflow is new to me. I don't understand what / how :
- You have a solid body in the top assembly and want to subtract the (600) components from this body ?

1) Link all the component-bodies into the top assy, then subtract ?
or
2) Export - part all into a single part ( no associativity) then subtract.

Curious.

RE: subtracting components

I would love to know what you are doing there !

RE: subtracting components

If the target is a component (or could be a component if it is currently and assembly level body) then using "Insert, Combine, Assembly Cut" might prove to be a viable option.

great solution jpetech...this will be my newest keyboard shortcut for sure!

The assy cut option is out of its mind!!!!! I have three pics to show the huge issue with this command.
First one shows my casting with the "blue" subtractions.

Second one shows the result after assy cut is run. Holy crap where did all my tagged faces go? Really a problem before i shaded the solids, and thank god i had not saved my assy.

Third pic shows the modeling settings. The "extracted & lined" options have both been used with the same result to the target component.

now using subtract:
Ug is so picky....no rhyme no reason on this one
if i pick a target solid in my main assy....now window a bunch of solids....then single pick a solid to subtract...then finish windowing the desired solids.....the solids will subtract sometimes. I have not figured out when it works and when it dont!

I don’t like the fact that it will do 1 of 2 things depending on "keep tool" status. If it is on it will remove the subtracted solid from all components. In nx3 u could subtract and it would remove all solids in the main while keeping the solids in my components for future subtractions.

I miss u nx3 subtract!!!!

RE: subtracting components

If you have moldwizard (or progessive die wizard ) license
you could use the pocket command.

NX 7.5

RE: subtracting components

We use the moldwizard pocket feature and this what it does. It takes a false body(a solid that you create that has all your clearances)links it into your component and subtracts it. You can take all 600 of your components and link them into your assembly, make the component you want them subtracted out of your displayed part and window all of them for one subtract feature.

RE: subtracting components

(OP)
i have neither

i think i found why this works sometimes. the window-pick single-window only works if i am in my main and have the target solid as my work part. if the target solid is in my main it will not subtract them at all with a window. why would this work differently????? its picky ug stuff like this that should work the same all the time.

linking all that stuff together is very time consuming and i usually end up fighting the association of the link at some point during changes. some of the tool solids are components and some are solids in the main.
