Buckling Restraint examples

Buckling Restraint examples

(OP)
Hi,

I'm after some information about buckling restraints for beams. My understanding is that it reduces the effective length.

After pictures which demonstrate what a XX column restraint and YY column restraint are in real life.

I use Microstran (but assume its same for other structural code checkers)

Thanks,

Joe Banger

Rather disappointed in lack of response.

Can some one suggest a more appropriate forum for me to post information. Would have thought that Structural Engineering was apt.

RE: Buckling Restraint examples

You didn't get an answer because your question is poorly phrased and uses terms that aren't traditional. Beams are laterally restrained (not buckling restrained), even though the intent is to prevent lateral torsional buckling. This is usually done by members framing perpendicularly into the beam at the point you want to provide lateral support.
But this is taught in Steel Design 1 (I'm assuming you're designing steel). If you don't know this, I question what you're designing.

RE: Buckling Restraint examples

Not sure what you want to know. You start out talking about restraints for beams, then switch to XX and YY restraints for columns.

A member restraint at a point along the length of a member is anything which prevents the member from deflecting at that point, i.e. a bracing member. So if a beam is 20' long and I am concerned about lateral torsional buckling (LTB), I could laterally brace the compression flange at midspan so that the unbraced length is reduced to 10'. In that way, the beam can resist much larger moments without lateral torsional buckling.

In the case of a column, the entire cross section may be in compression, so bracing at discrete points would increase resistance to axial buckling. XX and YY refer to the major and minor axis of the section. Sometimes the minor axis is braced at closer intervals than the major axis.

I have never used Microstran, but the attached provides some further information which you may find useful:

Thanks for help BAretired. You showed skill, empathy and knowledge in your response. Your link helped me a lot.

No thanks to JedClampett for your hubris and arrogance - people like you make forums an intimidating place for newcomers like me.

My application is a temporary structure (aid work) in a cyclonic jungle area. not a critical structure as they rebuild them after a TC or storm.
