Existing Steel Lintel supporting 8" CMU...

Existing Steel Lintel supporting 8" CMU...

(OP)
I have an existing 8'-0" wide window opening supporting 4 courses of 8" CMU + 10' of roof (12" bar joists with 6" spancrete deck).

I do not have access to the existing drawings (except pieces of a roof plan that show the joists and spancrete - no lintels) and have not seen the make-up of the lintel. I expect it to be steel and not masonry but if anyone has thoughts or ideas on this please share.

The building was built in 1965. It is CMU bearing walls with steel bar joists and spancrete deck. Also if you know how the spancrete would be attached to deck and walls please share.

We are adding a pergola structure to the roof so I am adding new point loads on the CMU (and over window openings). I also need to tie into the building diaphragm (the spancrete).

My typical detail for an 8' window opening would be double 6x3.5x3/8" angle LLV. Or an inverted WT. But I am not familiar with what they did in 1965.

Thank you!

RE: Existing Steel Lintel supporting 8" CMU...

Not sure what they might have done, but how much additional load are you adding? To me a pergola would not be that much more weight. Can you say your under 5% additional load and call it good?

RE: Existing Steel Lintel supporting 8" CMU...

It is a huge pergola - a decorative arch that spans 46'. The new load from wind and snow will be 3kips so it is going to overload it. I just want to see by how much.

RE: Existing Steel Lintel supporting 8" CMU...

I think your going to have to tear into the structure to find out what it is.

I can going to bolt a channel to the masonry to reinforce. Thx.
