Impact test

Impact test

Impact test

(OP)
Hi
my question is about welding procedure that is combination of GTAW and SMAW . WPS requires impact test.according to B 31.3 states “impact specimens shall be made for each welding procedure, type of electrode, or filler metal (i.e., AWS E-XXXX classification) and each flux to be used.” do we have to do impact test for GTAW welded portion and SMAW portion or only one set impact test for sample?

thanks

RE: Impact test

Yes, per Table 323.3.1 you need to run impacts for GTAW and SMAW processes. The filler metals or electrodes are not the same specification.

RE: Impact test

Interesting, because I have seen many fabricators here in ON test the GTAW root and SMAW fill together. I've probably even done that myself, while realizing it is technically not valid. I'd be interested in hearing more people's experiences.

RE: Impact test

There could be an official interpretation regarding the above, which would support a combined process coupon. I don't have access to B31.3 interpretations. My interpretation was simply reading the existing words in Table 323.3.1.

RE: Impact test

I'm unable to comment as to whether or not B31.3 specifically addresses this question by way of an interpretation, however, ASME B31.3 references ASME Sec IX for procedure qualification and, therein, is an interpretation that covers this issue. See IX-92-42
Basically, a single set of impact specimens may be used to qualify multiple processes provided each process is represented in the test.
Obviously this is intended for combination procedures on thin materials.

RE: Impact test

It has been common practice to qualify a combination process WPS under B31.3; the deposited weld metal from each process must be included in the impact test.

RE: Impact test

Thanks for the Section IX Interpretation knowledge.

The potential for abuse is there, if process A (poor Cv properties) is tested together with process B (good Cv), but then a WPS is generated based only on process A and used in a Cv application.
