"Block" welding

"Block" welding

Can someone tell me if this is in code....im talking of an unbalanced welding technique of bead deposits favoring one side of a weld joint....i had a UNION welder and inspector tells me its not a code violation to do it....its a .270 wall thickness... vertical weld on a fixed panel in a boiler. welder went from root to capping without filling in weld 1st....its also a bad technique to trap slag and have cold lap....but the engineer is also telling me its not in code....as a welder i had to cut out a weld due to this....any info you share would greatly be appreciated

RE: "Block" welding

welding terminology used is "block welding"

RE: "Block" welding

This type of welding is not mentioned in Boiler and Pressure Vessel Codes because it's a technique. Ultimately, if the code requires full or partial penetration welds, it is left up to the organization responsible for welding to ensure full penetration or partial penetration, per design code requirements.

ok i found a code in AWS 3.0.....4.2.2.1 (13) on page 23.....that addresses this also...i know im working under B.PV code however thought it maybe in it also... thnx for your help metengr!!!

RE: "Block" welding

Block welding can be a useful technique, when properly performed, to reduce welding stress, especially when tieing in at corners. I've developed procedures for it use in that case and to lower preheat when preheating was difficult. Improperly used, it can lead to lack of fusion at tie in locations, slag entrapment, distortion and cracking.

RE: "Block" welding

block welding will increase stress in already welded side
