Trim material for Vacuum Tower Bottoms liquid

(OP)
I have inquiry from my customer a relief valve for Vacuum Tower Bottoms Liquid service. He ask for Trim 5 material and that is not available at the moment. I would like to know whether other alternative material (e,g Stainless Steel 316) can take this service or not. Appreciate someone help me on that.

RE: Trim material for Vacuum Tower Bottoms liquid

API Trim 5 is fully stellited (i.e., seat and disc) compared to, for example API trim 8 which is "half stellite", i.e., only the seat whereas the disc is 410. So you could move from API trim 8 to API trim 5 with confidence; however, shifting from API trim 5 to an SS316 trim means using API trim 10 (see the API trim chart: http://alloy-valves.com/Alloy-Valves-Product-Range/API-600-trim-chart.php

Whether you can substitute API Trim 5 with API trim 10 depends on the process, and of course, on your customer's approval. Generally, however, there's a reason why valve trims are specified as they are; in case of a stellited specification, there may be concerns of with regard to corrosion, erosion, abrasion, sliding wear, oxidation, galling or pressure-temperature considerations.
