Reinforced Concrete Slab Design

Reinforced Concrete Slab Design

(OP)
Hi Everyone,

Need help with analysis of a reinforced concrete slab. Does anyone have a quick reference for calculating the strength&deflection of various concrete slabs. Preferably a computer program as well. Thank you.

No, that is not a quick subject. It requires more knowledge than can be imparted here.

Ditto to hokie66

RE: Reinforced Concrete Slab Design

Ditto to hokie and Ron. Your question is vague. Is it a building slab? a bridge slab? Is the slab supported by beams? Can it be considered a plate? People here are more than happy to nelp but we need specifics.

RE: Reinforced Concrete Slab Design

I recall many semesters of college going into this subject, across several years.

RE: Reinforced Concrete Slab Design

I just treat it like a beam with a couple of slab specific exceptions.

1) A lot of minimum and maximum steel quantities are different (ACI 318) since it is spread out and usually done both ways.
2) Stirrups are not used.
3) If it is a two way slab, drum effect can be used to decrease the required strength.

These are fairly basic slab design issues. And they involve very little math (no computer program required). Although you may want to use software for the beam analysis portion.

If you don't know enough about these subjects or simple rectangular concrete beam analysis, I think you need someone first hand to teach you about them.

That's a new one on me, Althalus. What is "drum effect"?

The drum effect is the sound it makes just before collapse.

For slab on ground, you can find from ACI.
