Joint Efficiency for Small Nozzle (Circ. Joint)

Joint Efficiency for Small Nozzle (Circ. Joint)

Joint Efficiency for Small Nozzle (Circ. Joint)

(OP)
Please all give your opinion on what value of "E" you apply to the circumferential joint of small pipes where it is not possible to apply welding from both sides and only full-pen welding from one side. After welding the joint is 100% RT'd. Does that mean that it is sure that the inside material deposit is sufficient to call it a "Type 1"? (I think not).

From my perspective it should be 0.6 per Table UW-12 as a Type 3 weld.
Some folks don't provide calcs for the longitudinal stress (circ. joint), only for the circumferential stress (long weld) since that is mostly limiting, but I always check.

PS: I know this is not a Compress software forum but I just want to mention that the downside to forcing this weld joint to be a Type 3, is that it the radiogaphy of the vessel to be reported as RT-4 which it is not if full RT is performed - if those folks are listening in!.
Maybe other software has the same effect?

RE: Joint Efficiency for Small Nozzle (Circ. Joint)

The 100%RT doesn't make the joint Type 1. It is a closing seam of Type 3 single sided welded, accordingly E=0.6 (within the Table UW-12 limitations).

RE: Joint Efficiency for Small Nozzle (Circ. Joint)

MikeG7, if the single side weld "will obtain the same quality of depositied weld metal on the inside and outside surfaces" then it can indeed be considered as a Type 1 joint. In practice this is done all the time by running a TIG root pass. If then full RT'd joint efficiency is 1.

Mike
