Shear Wall Line Offset

Shear Wall Line Offset

Shear Wall Line Offset

(OP)
I have a building that has a lower roof that intersects a main building in between an upper and lower floor diaphragm. I am carrying that roof shear down through a short shear wall to the lower floor diaphragm. I have included a pdf to help visualize. These short shear walls (E.1 and E.2) line up in between two shear wall lines (E and F) of the lower floor diaphragm. I have shear walls below along E.1 and E.2.

My question is, do I have to fix the main floor diaphragm at E.1 and E.2 in order to create a reaction for the shear walls along E.1 and E.2, or can I consider some sort of load sharing between E & F walls by transferring E.1 and E.2 through the floor diaphragm? How far offset can I assume that shear walls act along the same braced wall line?

RE: Shear Wall Line Offset

I don't believe you can have any offset for shear walls, they are not Braced Wall Lines as in the perspective residential method (4' steps allowed). I would add a hold down to each end of those lines and a complete load path for the couple. With the proximity of those lines, you can probably assume the shear force being shared between the two lines (V_trib = E + E1), but this is a 'Engr. Judgment' call and may depend on the forces/other aspects.
