Difference between Ford VSSs

Difference between Ford VSSs

(OP)
I'm wondering if anyone can give me a run-down on the differences between the VSS used in a '96 explorer and that used in a '99 explorer.  I understand that the '96 VSS mounts in the trans output shaft housing, and the '99 mounts somewhere in the diff housing.  How do the mating features of the sensors compare?  How do the output signals compare?  Do the sensors read the same number of "bumps?"  The eventual goal would be to plug a sensor in the '99 sensor's location into the '96 computer and get the right speed reading.
