Dear Friends,

we got a sample of spindle axle and buyers has not provide any information on heat treatment.required ur expert advice if any one can help us in understanding the heat treatment of hollow spindle axle picture is attached. we required to know how much case depth is required in this and how much area is induction hardened or any body has manufactured this type of spindle.

please find the attach pic

regards

RE: spindle axle

The spindle is induction hardened, most likely initiating below the shoulder (ring at bottom) and terminating before reaching the threads. There is a finish operation on the inner and outer bearing surfaces. The most critical part of the pattern is the shoulder radius, where you want case but not through hardened and no grain coarsening.

RE: spindle axle

What kind of specs or requirements do you have?

Would trailer axle be a good guess?

Dear dbooker
thanks alot for the information which u shared.. is it ok to have 2 to 3 mm case depth at 45 hrc at the areas which u specified. materials is S45C...

Dear tmoose

thanks we have only the sample with us and from sample we have to manufacture the spindle.yes trailer axle would be a good guess.
regards

RE: spindle axle

The 2-3mm depth of hardening is not unusual for this type of component, maybe deeper in the journal radius. You may have to do some fatigue testing to verify. Surface hardness and microstructure are just as important. You can achieve the noted case depth but if your heating and quenching system is inconsistent, that depth will not mean much.
