Projected Area of Pipe for Wnd Load Calculation

(OP)
I need to calculated Wind Load on pipe with a height of 64 feet. Can someone confirm if the projected area = dia. of pipe x lenth (i.e 64')? Thanks

RE: Projected Area of Pipe for Wnd Load Calculation

It is, but if this is a cantilever, vortex shedding may be a bigger problem.

RE: Projected Area of Pipe for Wnd Load Calculation

That is what I have usually done and it is conservative, simple project area. The older CBC had lower Cq values for round shapes versus rectangular if you're looking to reduce your loads. You may also want to compare the "Other Structures - Method 2" in ASCE 7-05. Check Figure 6-21, the Cf factor is lower for a round shape versus rectangular.
