Con Edison Waterproof Transformers

Con Edison Waterproof Transformers

(OP)
I recently read that Con Edison is replacing a good portion of their inground transformers with waterproof type. I was under the impression that the typical oil filled type transformer was watertight. Anyone know what manufacturer Con Ed is using for the new watertight transformers?

Thanks.

RE: Con Edison Waterproof Transformers

Waterproof or SUBMERSIBLE?? Con Ed has their own way of doing things and will often have their own standards. Standard oil-filled transformer is not designed to be underwater.

RE: Con Edison Waterproof Transformers

The standard oil-filled transformer's TANK is liquid-tight, but the assorted fittings and gauges are not quaranteed to be immersible

RE: Con Edison Waterproof Transformers

I think all of ConEd's "in ground" network transformers are subway (submersible) type transformers. http://www.howard-ind.com/howardtransformers/Netwo... I think they are replacing the vault type network transformers, typically found in dry basements of buildings with subway transformers after the extensive flooding from Hurricane Sandy. We've replaced some network transformers we have in building basements that flood from time to time with subways. The extra expense was well worth it than drying the transformer every time it floods....
