pipeline engineer vs production facilities engineer

pipeline engineer vs production facilities engineer

pipeline engineer vs production facilities engineer

(OP)
Hi,
career advice please:
I have been a surface production facilities engineer for 4 years; writing standards, sizing separators, running calculations on piping, sizing flares, etc.
for the last 6 months, I've been assigned to pipeline projects (little pipelines from 100' to 8 miles), nothing that big.

I've come to really like the pipeline part of the work, it's project oriented and seems like something I like. but I don't know what prospects are there for pipeline engineers as far as climbing up the lather with time.

I've never really considered myself a management type person, I can handle it when the time comes, but I consider myself someone that will like to handle projects and just lead a few engineers, or just have contractors report to me on projects. on the other hannd, surface production facilities seem to be attractive in gaining recognitions. it's a bit confusing for me.

right now, I'm in a position where I can just continue to go in the pipeline line direction, what are potential prospects for a pipeline engieer other than become a Sr. engineer, and then manager and cordinating projects and supervising engineers, can I actually become a pipeline specialist/contractor/consultant of my own, is it a brighter prospect. Again, I can do both job, I seem to like pipeline more.
Also, I'm writing my PE exam soon.

thanks for your advice.

As much as possible, do it right the first time...
