Tack Welding in Bridge Girders

Tack Welding in Bridge Girders

(OP)
Has anyone heard of or are aware of precast subs in the US using tack welds of mild weldable rebar in prestressed girders as part of their ways and means of fabrication?

RE: Tack Welding in Bridge Girders

Does your state DOT provide any guidance on the matter? In NY, tack welding of design reinforcement is not allowed. However, tack welding of redundant steel is sometimes allowed.

On an unrelated note, please don't post the same question in multiple forums simulataneously. If you want to repost a question you should red flag the one you want deleted. Thanks.

Thanks for your answer bridgebuster. I agree with your answer but you are answering a slightly different question then what I asked. In my state (Ontario) tack welding is also not allowed "period". However it has recently (a few weeks ago) been learned that at least one and probably all of the precast subcontractors in Ontario have been tack welding the mild steel rebar in bridge girders for a long time. PSI publicly announced that they have been tack welding rebar in prestressed girders for at least 20 years. I understand that there is evidence that other precast subs have been doing the same. I believe PSI operates in the states but I don't know what they produce in the states. It's not so much a question of if they are allowed but if they are doing it. This is a big problem here in Ontario.
