Gate post foundation size and depth advice

Gate post foundation size and depth advice

Gate post foundation size and depth advice

(OP)
hi im wondering if anybody can help me find out any calculations needed to work out the correct foundation size and post depth for large close boarded hardwood gates,

RE: Gate post foundation size and depth advice

To do this, you need to get the wind loads from ASCE 7-05 or 7-10 on the gate. I would assume it as solid, as trying to figure out the amount of wind getting through the slats is iffy. Design the post as a cantilever, fixed at the ground surface or a little below the ground surface. For the foundation, use a concrete column embedded to a depth designated by the IBC section 1807.3 for unconstrained posts.
If this seems to be taking a lot more time than its worth, you're probably doing it right.

RE: Gate post foundation size and depth advice

For a heavy gate, design it for wind load and then add some. Don't forget the bending of the post itself, and the footing will always creep a bit under the constant loading of the gate. Using a slab as a strut at ground level helps. Adjustment can be done, but it is a pain.

we are trying to get a spreadsheet together for different gate widths and heights they are all close boarded in solid hardwoods, but we are about to get a contract in where we will need to specify the foundations required for each post and seems to be a minefield at the moment, thanks for the replies and will be looking in more detail. if any of the above makes any more sense and you have any ideas let me know.

I think that AASHTO has a requirement for 15 psf for chainlink fencing.
