I-43 /Fox River Bridge Green Bay

RE: I-43 /Fox River Bridge Green Bay

Seems strange for the very localized settlement of, or failure of, only one or two of the concrete bent structures across the entire width of the bridge, considering the upgrades made recently. Hopefully they removed the old resurfacing material before installing the new.

Sink hole? It will be interesting...

RE: I-43 /Fox River Bridge Green Bay

Problem was due to corrosion of steel piles supporting the concrete piers caused by local soil conditions. (http://www.jsonline.com/news/traffic/no-new-saggin...)

Plans for the repair can be founds here: ftp://ftp.dot.wi.gov/dtsd/hcci/plansandproposals/2...

Basically, saddling 4 of the existing piers with a combination of new drilled concrete shafts and post tensioned concrete. Steel girders on settled pier jacked back into alignment and shimmed.

"caused by local soil conditions".

So none of the other piers are affected? It was that "local"?

RE: I-43 /Fox River Bridge Green Bay

To paraphrase the late Tip o'Neill: "all soil is local."

RE: I-43 /Fox River Bridge Green Bay

Mike - apparently the problematic "soil" in question was mostly spend casting sand which had been dumped there or used as fill.
