Hi all,

I was hoping to get some opinions regarding a procedure qualification using under matching filler metal.

In the next few weeks I will need to do a D1.1 procedure qualification with A514 quenched and tempered steel. The customer has specified under matching filler metal, E90 and E100 depending on the joint.

I would just like to know how you would handle the tensile test documentation in these situations. Section 4.9.3.5 states that the acceptance criteria for the reduced section tensile strength shall be no less than the minimum of the range of the base metal.

The way I interpret this is that even in an under matching situation the tensile pull must meet the base metal requirement otherwise there would be a note somewhere.

I would think that a tensile pull should have to meet the minimum requirements of the filler material in an under matching situation.

Clearly under matching is commonly used so there must be something that I am missing in the code book. Any advice on how you guys handle and document these situations would be great.

The Engineer or the Owner can modify the requirements of D1.1 to suite specific project conditions. This could be one where the required tensile strength must match that of the filler metal used.

Even when using under matching filler metal, there is a degree of strain strengthening that will be experienced. The UTS can be 10 ksi higher than the minimum specified tensile strength of the filler metal used.
