Trip to GGB

Trip to GGB

Trip to GGB

(OP)
GGB=Golden Gate Bridge :)

I'm going to be in San Fran next month and wanted to see if anyone knows anything in particular I should see at the bridge. Maybe someone knows about a private tour or something that would interest a structural engineer and that the general public doesn't usually see.

Thanks in advance :)

RE: Trip to GGB

Don't refer to it as San Fran... It is the city or San Francisco. I do not know of any private tours but i did recently hear that they may charge pedestrians to cross... The bridge abutments are pretty and i think you can get pretty close in some places but again not really a tour. In my opinion, as a once Bay Area native, I would check out the new Eastern span of the Bay Bridge before the GG; see those Billions of dollars in effect!

Enjoy your trip and try to only go to one touristy place a day if possible.

RE: Trip to GGB

When we were north of Frisco - yeah, all of us irreverent out-of-state types DID call it "Frisco" - in Vallejo, CA, the prettiest views of the Golden Gate were from the north side, from above the north tower on the hillside. You'll see the exit right after the bridge (if heading north) or the exit from the southbound side on the right. It's been many years for me (25+) so I an't say that the Nike anti-air nuclear rocket sites are still open for viewing, but those, the coastal defense forts, and the general views from above the towers are fantastic.

On the south side, try to get off the highway and go back under the bridge to the fort. I was never too much "in awe of" the golden gate/Presido park itself, but you/your guests/spouse might be. Everything in San Francisco itself is walk-able distances, but you'll really stretch your legs getting to everything if you do it in one day. You can do it if you're in good shape. IT WILL BE COLD. IT WILL BE WINDY. Wear a jacket, hat, sweater/coat type wrap. Fisherman's warf is a tourist attraction: one of those "been there, done that" things that you'll want to do once, but not again.
